Strike a Nerve

I really enjoy most aspects of being pregnant. One thing that I particularly enjoy is the way perfect strangers are so nice and make a point to ask about me and the baby. Most of these interactions with strangers are pleasant, but I've also gotten some really annoying comments with this third pregnancy.

1. "Oh, you're having your third baby, you know you could just keep going like that Dugger family did." Seriously?? I'm having baby #3, not #13 or #23. I think when people make this comment it is their sad attempt at humor. Not funny, people.

2. "Oh, you're having your third boy, that's great because boys are SO MUCH easier than girls." (For the record, this is not a majority statement...there are plenty of people who have responded, "third boy? Oh God bless you.") I know I'm pregnant & irritable & that people are just trying to share words of encouragement...but it annoys me because there is nothing easy about being a parent. And there is certainly nothing easy about having a 4-year-old & a 2-year-old and being pregnant. I'm pretty sure that it won't get any easier when the baby is born. Parenting is H-A-R-D, no matter if you have boys or girls, regardless of whether or not you work, and regardless of whether you have 1 child or 23. I can't think of a single instance when someone has said, "Wow, this parenting thing is so much easier than I ever expected!"

So I just have to remind myself that people are crazy and at times can say the most ridiculous things!

I had my doubts...

You will recall from my post a couple of weeks ago that the transition from crib to bed has been a tough one for Roper. About every other night he says he wants his crib back. I remind him that he's a big boy and now he has a big boy bed to sleep in, and he responds that he is a baby, not a big boy, and he wants his crib! He usually follows up with an emphatic, "Baby Duncan is not getting my crib!"

I have plenty of patience for this...he will get through it. What I don't have patience for is a bed-time routine that drags on & on with him getting up every 10 minutes before finally falling asleep post-9:00...and then him coming downstairs pre-6:00, usually with his big brother in tow whom he has already awakened.

One of Graem's co-workers suggested that we try one of the children's alarm clocks. I was really doubtful about how this would work...but I researched them and we settled on this owl night light/alarm clock.

owl

girl with owl

We programmed the owl with an acceptable wake-up time (7:00). When you press the owl's tummy at night or anytime before 7:00, his face glows yellow and he plays lullabies for 5 minutes. Then at 7:00 his face glows green.

Like I said, I seriously doubted this was going to work, but I was willing to give it a try. I'm so glad to report that it has been working in the mornings for over a week now! I can hear Roper through the monitor pre-7:00 talking to himself waiting for the "green light." Some nights are still tough at bed-time, but it's getting much better. The owl gets 5 stars from this mama!

Lefties

A few days ago I was talking to my mother (a leftie) about how I have been having trouble teaching Mason (also a leftie) the correct way to hold his pencil. He has never been especially interested in coloring or writing, which might be because he hasn't quite mastered the fine motor skill of holding his pencil/crayon properly. His preschool teacher has assured me that this is not unusual for boys. On the other hand (haha), he is captivated by some of the "games" I have on my iPad that require him to trace letters and numbers using just the tip of his finger (my favorites are the Montessorium games in case you are interested).

Anyway, as I was talking to my mother about all of this, she shared with me some interesting tidbits about lefties, some of which left me baffled. I turned to the expert on all random facts: google. I came across a blog (who knows if this stuff is true, but it agrees with some of the things my mom told me). Pretty interesting!

*************

Some facts on left-handed people from the Burlington News blog:
People who are left-handed make up about 5-15% of the population.

The genes for left-handedness are so far elusive.

Lefties are relatively numerous among creative men.

Lefties are relatively numerous among children rated as having an IQ higher than 131.

Lefties are relatively numerous among individuals who are good at music and maths.

Most left-handers draw figures facing to the right.

There is a high tendency in twins for one to be left-handed.

Stuttering and dyslexia occur more often in left-handers (Brantley's note: Mason has been in speech therapy for the past 6 months for mild stuttering).

Left-handers adjust more readily to seeing underwater.

Left-handers excel particularly in tennis, baseball, swimming and fencing.

Left-handers usually reach puberty 4 to 5 months after right-handers.

4 of the 5 original designers of the Macintosh (Apple) computer were left-handed.

1 in 4 Apollo astronauts were left-handed – 250% more than the normal level.

Almost 40% of the top tennis pros are left-handed.

Left-handed people are three times more likely than right-handed people to become alcoholics (scientists speculate that it is because the right hemisphere of the brain has a lower tolerance for alcohol than the left side of the brain).

People who are left-handed use the right side of the brain most while right-handed people use the left side most.

In many cultures children who were left-handed were forced to use their right hands instead.

More men than women are lefties.

Left-handed stroke victims recover faster than right-handed stroke victims.

Left-handers more likely than right handers to be creative geniuses.

Left-handers were severely discriminated against during the 18th and 19th centuries and it was often “beaten out” of people.

In adulthood, left-handers were often shunned by society, resulting in fewer marrying and reproducing.

As discrimination was reduced in the 20th century, the number of natural left-handers who stayed left-handed increased.

The rising age of motherhood contributed to more lefties, as, statistically, older mothers are more likely to give birth to left-handed children.

Left-handers are also generally better at 3-dimensional perception and thinking.

Left-handers are also usually pretty good at most ball sports and things involving hand-to-eye co-ordination.

Left-handers’ brains are structured differently in a way that widens their range of abilities.

A study found that left-handed men are 15% richer than right-handed men for those who attended college, and 26% richer if they graduated.

Left-Hander’s Day is August 13th.

In 60s music, Jimi Hendrix played a right-handed Fender Stratocaster strung upside down to accommodate his left-handedness. Paul McCartney of The Beatles is left-handed; when he first played for John Lennon, he played Lennon’s right-handed guitar upside-down. Ringo Starr of the Beatles is also left-handed.

Left-handed persons are thought to process information using a “visual simultaneous” method in which several threads can be processed simultaneously.

Left-handed people have an excellent ability to multi-task.

The hypothesis that left-handed people are predisposed to visual-based thought has been validated by a variety of evidence.

Left-handed university students are more likely to major in visually-based subjects, as opposed to language-based subjects. Another sample of 103 art students found an astounding 47% were left- or mixed-handed.

In the Middle Ages, writing with your left hand was punishable by death.

Half of left-handed people use a computer mouse with their right hand.

If both parents are left-handed, 50% of their offspring will be left-handed. 2 Righties only have a 2% chance of having a leftie. (Graem & I are both righties).

There are twice as many left handed boys than girls.

*******************

Clearly this list was compiled by someone that is left-handed!

Roses in November

I know its December now...but when I was going through my Thanksgiving pictures, I came across this picture of a rose that I cut out of my yard the day after Thanksgiving! I'm glad I got a picture, because it's probably the last I'll see of my roses until the spring. The past few days have been so cold, I'm pretty sure it's officially winter!

One More Thing...

...I meant to write about this in my earlier post. Have any of you heard of or read The China Study?

china study

I haven't read the book (yet) but I've been told that it's been known to turn folks into vegetarians. My carnivorous husband is currently reading it. I once prepared a meatless dinner and Graem commented that it "looked like a good appetizer." In his mind its not a meal if it doesn't include meat! This should be interesting!

Why is Roper scared of horses?

Doesn't he know his mama was riding horses from a much younger age?

Fortunes

Last weekend we had chinese take out for supper one night...the boys' favorite part is the fortune cookie at the end. Their fortunes always amuse me because they usually just don't apply to children!

I was pondering about whether or not to share their fortunes on the blog, when Google Images returned this image...I guess that settles it!

Roper's fortune...keep in mind he is not yet 2 years old...

You will soon be reunited with an old friend.

Mason's fortune...

Investigate new possibilities with friends. Now is the time!

Masonisms

Mason cracks us up on a daily basis with some of the hilarious stuff he comes up with. Some of his more recent funnies...

1. He has learned to recite "Humpty Dumpty"...but he has added his own special ending. All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again. But the fireman could.

2. Last week we spent a couple of nights on the farm. My parents live on Roper Road. As we turned on Roper Road, Mason said, "Here we are...Roper Road. But I like to call it Ro-Ro Road."

What is it?

There's nothing quite like a live auction. I grew up going to horse auctions and always loved the excitement when my Daddy would bid on a horse and then {maybe} win it! We would always get to the sale early to check out all the horses and he would point out the good/bad qualities of each one, making notes in his program. I think in my mind the mark of the best horse was whichever one had the prettiest braided mane. :)

Last Saturday I went to a live auction estate sale in Aiken. Graem's Aunt Kathy told me about it...she really wanted this wingback chair covered in a red and white buffalo check fabric. What she didn't realize was that it was actually a pair of chairs. She couldn't be at the sale, so she was texting me about the chair(s) and asked me to bid for her on one...but she didn't want me to go over $150.

I ended up with the winning bid on one chair for $70 and they told me I could double the price for both chairs. So...I ended up getting both chairs for less than she wanted to spend on one!! I have to say it was quite a rush and made me want to give up my job as a real estate appraiser and become an antiques dealer!

I picked up a few things for myself as well...just little things. A few pieces of pottery, a cake stand, and a sweetgrass basket(?). Or a sweetgrass "something." I have no idea what the purpose of this thing is...but it's sweetgrass and I got it for ten bucks, so I love it anyway! Please leave a comment if you know what I'm supposed to use this for!

They had a lamp that I really wanted to bid on but I finally had to drag myself away from the place before they got to it. They only downside was all the JUNK they auctioned, with treasures mixed in. Roper was with me for the first couple of hours I was there before Graem came by to pick him up...he was a perfect angel...I think he was as entranced by the auction as I was!

44 and 22

Today marks Roper's 22-month birthday and Mason's 44-month birthday. This is significant because Roper was born on Mason's 22-month birthday. And for all of you nerds out there, you will appreciate that for today and today only Mason is exactly twice Roper's age. (I stopped counting Mason's age in months a LONG time ago...I just think the 22/44 thing is interesting).

The strange thing is that when Roper was born Mason seemed to be very much a big boy...but now at the same age, Roper is still very much my baby.

And I know this is a picture from last summer, but I've really had beach brain for the past few weeks...I seriously need some salt water in my life.
